M35 Buccaneer

The Buccaneer is my version of the 1st pattern Navy folding knife. The one that goes way back to olden times, back around the time of the War of Independence. They were neat knives and believe it or not, the original instructions on the knife stated that to cut large rope with it, it should be “hit on the spine with a wooden baton”. Of course, that endeared me to it right away.

On top of that, it’s a pretty nice pattern for a woods knife. The straight edge runs continuous all the way to the tip. That allows you to make really long and thin shavings from wood. There’s no tip for drilling, which could be viewed as a negative. But that negative can be viewed as a positive because there is no tip to break off, so light prying can be done with more confidence. And when I carry a knife like this in the woods, I just carry a pocket knife with an awl for drilling. The awl is purposed built for that task and the pocket knife doesn’t add any considerable weight to your kit.

The base for the Buccaneer is the M25 Wicked Witch. So if you’ve used and like that knife, you’ll have an idea what this one will feel like.
