M34 Mako

For years I’ve been asked to make a Ray Mears Woodlore knife and for the most part, I’ve refused. The reasons don’t matter, I just didn’t want to make one on the regular…or at all, even though I have done a few back in the day.

Well…I finally gave in, kinda. The Mako is my interpretation of the Woodlore knife and the Randall Drop Point hunter. It’s probably closer to a Randall DP knife than a woodlore because of…the drop point. heh. But, if you look at the Woodlore knife it is definitely in the same pattern family as the Randall DP (which came many years before the Woodlore).

The Mako has the Turley dropped edge design which makes it look and perform different from the afore mentioned knives. Other than that it’s pretty similar to them both, it takes a little from each knife, mixes it with the my style and puts them all to use.

If you are used to a Woodlore knife with a low Scandi grind and you want to try a Mako, I suggest getting a varied grind. It has the low height of a Scandi, right in front of the handle scales, and runs out to a full height grind at the tip for better slicing ability than the low Scandi grind.
